Alexander Hornemann and his brother Eduard were the sons of a couple that worked for Philips. After they were arrested by German authorities, Alexander and his brother Eduard were brought to camp Vught and from there to Auschwitz. In Auschwitz Alexander Hornemann, his brother Eduard and twenty other children were kept apart from other inmates. In November 1944 they were brought to Neuengamme and subjected to medical experiments. On 20 April 1945 they were brought to the Bullenhuser Damm in Hamburg, a former schoolbuilding, and murdered there.

After the war a public garden in Eindhoven was named after the two brothers. Fons Rademaker's 1990 film 'The Rose Garden' is based on this story.
