Palestine pioneers

Young people who registered for agricultural training to prepare for migration to contemporary Palestine.

Many young Jews believed that establishing a Jewish state in Palestine was the only way to cope with the rising anti-Semitism in Europe. This preparation, known as hakhsharah, was necessary to learn the skills required in the undeveloped area. Completing this course was also a requirement for obtaining a British immigration visa, known as a Palestine certificate. Younger pioneers attended a special training program called the youth aliyah.
